PROJECT OVERVIEW

The prompt of this project was to rethink what a screened porch might be should it sit alongside a historical home in the heart of Charlottesville. The result is a wonderfully inhabitable garden room that serves as a link between the garden spaces, lively street, and the interior of the home. Its simple shape respects the home's historic architectural style while holding it own as something new. Care was taken in the details to create a special place in which to relax, eat dinner, and play games. The warm cedar lining of the canopy extends outside of the screening, blurring the boundary between inside and out. A steel rod cross brace not only provides lateral support but also adds an aesthetic element of interest. The top of the horizontal rail is a perfect spot to set a drink while a strip light on the bottom provides a band of light at dusk.

An angled warm cedar canopy creates a cozy outdoor room below with proximity to both the flowers of the garden and neighbors walking the street beyond.
